چکیده
Medaka/Chronic ƒÁ-irradiation/Fecundity /Fertility Eggs of the medaka, Oryzias latipes, were irradiated continuously with 137Cs ƒÁ-rays at exposure-rates of 10, 100 and 1000 R/day from the morula stage to hatching. Newly hatched fry were transferred to non-irradiation field. At one year after hatching medaka were tested for their fecundity and fertility. When irradiated females were mated with unirradiated males, both the total number of oviposition and number of eggs per oviposition decreased with in creasing exposure-rate, whereas almost all the eggs laid were fertilized. However, a decrease in the hatchability of these "normal" eggs was observed in groups of 100 and 1000-R/day exposure-rate. When irradiated males were mated with unirradiated females, an increase in the number of abnormal eggs was obtained in groups of 100 and 1000-R/day exposure-rate, whereas no changes in both the total number of oviposition and number of eggs per oviposi tion were observed. No change in hatchability of the eggs in this group was also observed even when the highest exposure-rate, i.e., 1000 R/day, was applied.

P-5: Chronic Mustard Toxicity on the Testis:A Historical Cohort Study Two Decades afterExposure
Background: We aimed to assess the long-term toxic effects of sulphur mustard (SM) on the testis and male fertility two decades after exposure. Materials and Methods: A historical cohort study was conducted in 2005. Sixty-four SM-exposed and 64 matched SMunexposed casualties of the Iraq–Iran conflict were enrolled. Fecundity status, semen indices, hormonal assay results and testis histopatholog...
متن کاملEffects of N-acetylcysteine on life shortening induced by chronic low dose-rate gamma-ray exposure in mice
Background: The development of methods to alleviate radiation-induced health effects is important for the practical use of radiation therapy and for understanding the molecular mechanisms mediating these effects. Here, we examined the protective capability of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) on life-shortening effects induced by continuous low dose-rate gamma-ray exposure in mice. Materials and Methods: ...
متن کاملNatural environmental gamma radiation exposure and prevalence of breast cancer in Poços de Caldas, MG, Brazil
Background: Environmental ionizing radiation has been associated with increased cancer risk by several studies. The Brazilian city of Poços de Caldas, MG, seats on a huge deposit of uranium, which was until recently mined. We performed a retrospective analysis of 310 cases of patients with breast cancer, who were exposed for at least ten years to different levels of ion...
متن کاملThe Japanese medaka, Oryzias latipes, as a new model organism for studying environmental germ-cell mutagenesis.
The effects of genotoxic substances on ecosystems should be assessed using various test systems with multiple genetic end points. The most widely used test system has been the specific-locus test developed by W.L. Russell, using the mouse. We are developing a new, nonmammalian test system using the Japanese medaka, Oryzias latipes. We have examined 625,926 embryos that correspond to 1,586,649 l...
متن کاملEffects of bisphenol a on the reproduction of Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes).
We elucidated the effects of bisphenol A (BPA) on the reproductive capacity (fecundity and fertility) and estrogenic response of adult Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes) and studied the transgenerational effects (F, generation growth and sex) of this agent on the F1 offspring. Eight mating pairs of medaka were exposed to BPA for three weeks at a measured concentration of 837, 1,720, or 3,120 mic...
